The most popular web hosting control panel is cPanel. This is where you manage the backend of your website. However, you may come across a few questions along the way. We will address all of the common questions related to cPanel in this all-in-one cPanel tutorial series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How to Use cPanel\u2019s File Manager<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
cPanel’s File Manager is the tool you need to do basic file management. In addition to uploading and extracting files, you can also create files and folders, assign permissions, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It shares much of the same functionality as an FTP client, although it is not as powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Step 1. How to Find the File Manager<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
1. The File Manager<\/strong> can be found when you are logged into your cPanel account. It\u2019s located under the Files<\/strong> section. Alternatively, you can search by name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
2. Upon opening the tool, you’ll be taken to a new window, which shows navigation and management options as well as a list of folders and files that are part of your website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Note:<\/strong> From here on we\u2019ll only work with the public_html<\/strong> folder. All of the remaining folders are mostly required by the system to ensure the cPanel service is working properly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Step 2. How to Navigate the File Manager<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
First of all, there\u2019s a window section that shows you a folder tree on the left, and a folder\u2019s contents on the right. You can navigate to a folder by clicking on the appropriate one. For example, clicking the public_html<\/strong> folder will show you its content \u2013 .well-known, cgi-bin, robots.txt,<\/strong> etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Alternatively, you can also navigate to a specific folder by writing its full name path and clicking Go<\/strong> from the folder tree search feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
There are several navigation functions available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Home<\/strong> \u2014 when you click it, it will show you the Home<\/strong> folder and its content<\/li>
Up One Level<\/strong> \u2014 goes up one level from your current place. For example, when you\u2019re on cgi-bin<\/strong> folder and click this, it\u2019ll bring you back to the public_html<\/strong> folder, which is a higher level than the cgi-bin folder<\/li>
Back\/Forward<\/strong> \u2014 works pretty much the same as back\/forward navigation in your web browser<\/li>
Reload<\/strong> \u2014 refresh the page to show changes made<\/li>
Select\/Unselect All<\/strong> \u2014 to select or unselect files or folders<\/li>
View Trash<\/strong> \u2014 shows the Trash<\/strong> folder where all deleted files reside<\/li>
Empty Trash<\/strong> \u2014 to clear the Trash<\/strong> folder. You can only use this feature while in the Trash<\/strong> folder<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Step 3. Using the File Management Features<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
After learning about navigation, the next important thing is to get to know the file management features. There is a toolbar available to help you but you can also access most of the features by right-clicking on a specific item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
File<\/strong> \u2013 you can create a new file inside a selected folder by using this feature. Here we\u2019ll create an index.php<\/strong> file in the public_html<\/strong> folder.<\/li>
Folder<\/strong> \u2013 this feature lets you create a new folder. Here, we\u2019ll create one named test-folder<\/strong>.<\/li>
Copy<\/strong>\u2013 you can copy the selected file to a specific destination. We\u2019re going to copy the index.php<\/strong> that we\u2019ve created to the test-folder<\/strong>.<\/li>
Move<\/strong> \u2013 This feature works exactly like Copy<\/strong>. The only difference is that the file will be removed from its original location.<\/li>
Upload<\/strong> \u2013 here you can upload a file to your hosting account. However, you can\u2019t upload folders. To upload folder or larger file, you can use an FTP client. You have two options to upload the file, either directly drag and drop it or select the file from your computer manually. Once you finished, click the Go Back to<\/strong> link.<\/li>
Download \u2013 <\/strong>this feature will download the selected files to your computer.<\/li>
Delete<\/strong> \u2013 this option moves the selected file to the Trash folder. If you want to remove the file permanently, check the Skip the trash and permanently delete the files box.<\/li>
Restore \u2013 <\/strong>This feature is only available when you\u2019re in the Trash folder. You can restore a removed file to its folder origin.<\/li>
Rename\/Edit\/HTML Editor \u2013 <\/strong>You\u2019ll need these features to edit your files. They work pretty similarly like any text editor software and can be quite a help for editing on the go. Though it uses a WYSIWYG interface, it\u2019s not quite powerful as other HTML editor software.<\/li>
Permissions<\/strong> \u2013 You need this feature to assign permission to a specific file or folder. We recommend you don\u2019t change anything unless you completely understand what you\u2019re doing, as changing the wrong permission can cause your website problems.<\/li>
View<\/strong> \u2013 Use this to view a file, for example, to open a picture or view the content of the index.php<\/strong> file.<\/li>
Extract\/Compress \u2013 <\/strong>With compress, you can archive chosen content to a Zip, Gzip, or Bzip2 format. Extract will do the opposite \u2013 extract an archive.<\/li>
Settings \u2013 <\/strong>With this feature you can set up your preferences. For example, you can set the default folder to open whenever you use the File Manager<\/strong>. You can also choose to Show Hidden Files (dotfiles)<\/strong>. For example, if you want to edit .htaccess<\/strong> to blocking certain aspects of your website.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
That\u2019s basically all you need to know about the navigation and management features on the File Manager<\/strong>. Next, we\u2019ll discuss bandwidth usage, which is another important aspect for your hosting plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How to Check Bandwidth<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Bandwidth is all of the incoming and outgoing traffic or data being transferred on your hosting account. The usage depends on many factors, including visitors, email communication, and may include the FTP connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You need to take a closer look at bandwidth usage, as it usually relates to the hosting plan that you subscribed to. cPanel will send an automated email notification when you\u2019re close to the limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Step 1. Access a Short Summary of Bandwidth Usage<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
When you log in, you can immediately see the bandwidth use the summary in the right-hand panel under the statistics section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Step 2. Access the Bandwidth Statistics in cPanel<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
You can find the full statistics presented in detail by clicking the Bandwidth<\/strong> link from the previous step. Alternatively, you can also search bandwidth by name with the search feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
When you click either of the two options, it will direct you to a new window that shows the consumption based on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis as well as the total sum of your usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
